Carnac Island - the last frontier?

Carnac Island – the last frontier?

Isn’t it always the way that the places on your doorstep are the ones you never seem to get to? We’re great overseas travellers, but how many native Sandgropers have crossed the short bit of sea to visit the magnificent island just off the coast of Freo? Carnac Island is virtually my office at the moment. We’re doing half day and day trips out there as regular tours, and I never tire of it. read more

Wanna buy a Starsand t-shirt?

Wanna buy a Starsand t-shirt?

When I said this to the passengers on the Kimberley cruises this year, most of them jumped at it. When I told them they could come back and be volunteer crew if they showed up at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour wearing said t-shirt, I didn’t realise how gung-ho they were. I’ve already had a few familiar faces (in familiar t-shirts) down at Freo waiting to take me up on the offer. They seem to… read more

A gift of fresh air

A gift of fresh air

It can be hard to get the imagination into gear when it comes to buying Christmas gifts. Suddenly it’s silly season and you’re planning a holiday and tying up end-of-year threads and the last thing on your mind is buying  thoughtful, perfectly-suited gifts for all the people in your life. That’s where Starsand gift vouchers come in really handy. A bit of adventure, a bit of novelty, great… read more

I do

I do

That’s what the groom-to-be said when his best man popped the question: want a bachelor party that’s out of the ordinary, a heap of fun, and won’t end with you being tethered naked to a traffic light? And so it was that 8 blokes came on board Starsand last weekend for a buck’s weekend with a difference. We sailed out of sight, got a bit hands-on with the sailing, tied a few knots (for… read more

Team building triumph!

Team building triumph!

You may recall I had a booking from a bunch of pen-pushers keen to do a bit of corporate team bonding. Well, let it never again be said that actuaries are boring. This group of 10 from West Perth really had me on my toes as I showed them the ins and outs of sailing a yacht, the finer points of rope work and the art of navigating in nautical miles. I fully expected them to retreat to the bar… read more

The islands are jumping!

The islands are jumping!

I know this, because I just took a sneaky reccy sail out towards Carnac, just to see what was going on. A dozen sea lions, FIVE separate pods of dolphins and some big soaring sea birds – looking more welcoming than ever I thought, or maybe I was feeling sentimental. I love the way they seem to lead the way out towards the great Indian Ocean island wilderness, as if showing off their home turf. read more

Lei me down

Lei me down

Put me in a grass skirt. One wag of a company PA has booked Starsand for their Christmas party, on the condition that everyone – skipper and crew included – dress in full-blown Hawaiian gear. I’ve always said it’s a very casual dress code on Starsand, so I guess garish shirts and a few bright feathers won’t be out of place. I’ll take this colourful crowd out to Carnac Island for a bit… read more

Stand by, Rotto

Stand by, Rotto

This week I fielded a call from a lovely bloke whose family is planning a Christmas visit from his chilly homeland in Sussex. Even though we’ve been having the most wintry Spring in 80 years, let’s not forget how sultry it’s going to be in Perth by the time the family lands. How to best show them around in the height of the festive season? He’s chartered Starsand for an extended long weekend on… read more
