Isn’t it always the way that the places on your doorstep are the ones you never seem to get to? We’re great overseas travellers, but how many native Sandgropers have crossed the short bit of sea to visit the magnificent island just off the coast of Freo?
Carnac Island is virtually my office at the moment. We’re doing half-day trips out there every Friday, and I never tire of it. It’s a nature reserve, a perfect spot for Australian sea lions to breed. It’s rare that we don’t also see a few bottlenose dolphins in the vicinity too, along with heaps of Terns and other sea birds.
Those who opt to take the fast boat trip around the island (instead of lazing about on Starsand’s deck in the sunshine) learn about my favourite bit of Carnac wildlife trivia. Hint: it’s something to do with the gargantuan snake count. But don’t worry, we’ll keep you safe. And the snorkelling is a hoot!
